Repair & Renew Studio is a space for slowing down and reconnecting with our hands through repair, reuse, and thoughtful making. Through hands-on workshops, I invite people to care for what they already own — not by aiming for perfection, but by working with intention, attention, and curiosity.

My workshops focus on accessible, beginner-friendly techniques such as visible mending, hand sewing, and simple embroidery. We work at a calm, unhurried pace, allowing time to settle into the rhythm of stitching and the satisfaction of making something both useful and beautiful.

About Me

I’m Deepika Prakash, a lifelong maker, educator, and the founder of PatternReview.com, a global sewing community with over half a million members worldwide. For more than two decades, my work has centered on sharing knowledge, fostering connection, and creating welcoming spaces for people to learn and grow through making.

I’m grateful to have been invited to speak and teach widely within the sewing and design community, including delivering keynote addresses at major conferences such as the American Sewing Guild’s 40th Anniversary event and the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals’ annual conference. My writing has appeared in sewing publications, and I’ve shared conversations about sewing, creativity, and community through podcasts and public talks.

In 2021, I was honored as a Commonwealth Heroine by the State of Massachusetts in recognition of my work promoting equality and women’s leadership. I am also a co-author of 1,000 Clever Sewing Shortcuts & Tips; all royalties from the book were donated to charity, reflecting my belief that knowledge-sharing can and should be a force for good.

In recent years, my focus has shifted toward repair and renewal — mending worn garments, extending the life of clothing, and exploring hand stitching as a slow, meditative practice. Through Repair & Renew Studio, I teach workshops in libraries, colleges, and community spaces, inviting people to slow down, work with intention, and rediscover the quiet satisfaction of making something both useful and beautiful.

My Teaching Approach

I believe:

  • Sewing is a life skill anyone can learn
  • Slow, repetitive handwork can be calming and restorative
  • Learning happens best in generous, judgment-free spaces
  • Making and mending help us reconnect — to ourselves and to each other

My workshops are designed to meet people where they are. No prior sewing experience is required — curiosity and willingness to try are enough.

Why I Teach

Teaching repair and sewing is about more than passing along practical skills. One of the reasons I do this work is to reduce my own impact on the environment — and to help others do the same in ways that feel achievable and meaningful.

Mending a garment, reinforcing a worn spot, or taking time to embellish something we already own can be a small but powerful act. These choices slow down the cycle of constant replacement and remind us that care, attention, and time have value. Repair becomes a way to extend the life of our clothing while also cultivating a more thoughtful relationship with the things we use every day.

I don’t approach this work from a place of guilt or urgency, but from one of possibility. Learning to repair and renew allows us to participate — gently and imperfectly — in reducing waste, honoring materials, and making more intentional choices. Each stitch is small, but together they add up.

Through these workshops, I hope to share skills that support both personal satisfaction and a quieter, more mindful way of living

If you’re interested in hosting a workshop or collaborating, I’d love to hear from you.
